Overview
The River is a movement breaking through denominational and social barriers. We believe in the fellowship and worship of God from all people and nations and the exercising of spiritual gifts in decency and order. A place of exuberant praise and worship, The River empowers, equips and educates disciples. It is a beacon of hope to those familiar with the church and those with little to no church experience. We bridge the gap between sacred and secular, showing how God’s presence permeates all. With a non-judgmental, life-affirming approach, we allow the word of God and the Holy Spirit to do the work of regeneration and sanctification within the lives of our disciples. The River is an intergenerational congregation that cultivates an environment for traditional and contemporary worshippers to enjoy.
Statement of Belief
-
We are a resurrection people
-
We believe in God, the Eternal Spirit, who is made known to us in Jesus, and to whose deeds we testify: He was crucified, died, and was buried. On the third day, He rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, where He remains at the right hand of God. (1 Cor 15:50-58; Mark 16:19; Hebrews 1:3)
-
-
We believe in eternal life
-
Eternal life continues after death, either in heaven or hell, based on your decision to make Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior. When the rapture occurs, the dead in Christ will rise first, then those who are alive and remain (who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior) will be caught up to meet Him in the air. (John 3:16; Romans 6:23)
-
-
We welcome the Holy Spirit in our lives
-
The indwelling and baptism of the Holy Spirit enables us to live empowered lives in a broken and fractured world. (John 14:26; Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 6:19)
-
We advocate for the rights of the marginalized and oppressed through the aide of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:8; John 16:7-15)
-
-
We support predominantly black institutions
-
The African-American church is the oldest institution created by and controlled by African Americans. The local church is the place of membership where God has called you to receive spiritual empowerment on a consistent basis and grow as a disciple. (Psalm 122:1; Hebrews 10:25)
-
Tithes and offerings are freely given to support the work of the church for local, state, national and global ministry (Leviticus 27:30; 2 Corinthians 9:5-7; Malachi 3:10; Proverbs 3:9-10) Alms giving to the poor, sick, homeless, and others in despair is an an act of Christian compassion (Prov. 19:17; Matthew 6:1-4; 1 John 3:17)
-
-
We believe in biblical equality
-
All life is sacred. Men, women, and children of all races, creeds, color were created in the image of God and are called to His service. (Gen.1:27; John 1:12; Gal.3:28; Joel 2:28, 29)
-
-
We believe the bible is authoritative
-
We read Scripture in the context of our community, informed by the tradition of our community. While we acknowledge the primacy of Scripture, our attempts to grasp its meaning always involve tradition, experience, and reason. We are aided by scholarly inquiry and personal insight, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
